Clay Journal: January 27th to February 25th, 2025; dimensions variable; ceramic, soil, thread
From 3.13.25 — This project was in response to the fires Los Angeles experienced in early January of 2025. These objects are vessels of my experience of time between January 27th and February 25th, 2025. They are loose replicas of natural objects - sticks, leaves, bark - that I would find on my daily walks around campus. Plant litter is in various stages of decomposition - somewhere in between death and life again. Through creating replicas of these objects with clay, a medium that takes a very long time to break down, I sought to solidify an essence of their being in the moment that I found them. Why is this important? Why is anything important? I am interested in the double edged sword of meaning: how we as humans have the capacity to imbue everything with meaning, yet nothing is permanent.
I am curious about how Life’s only constant is change.
